The Witch Within: Embracing the Power of Intuition

I’m a witch. Not the kind of witch you might picture in fairy tales or Halloween costumes. My definition of “witch” comes from something much deeper—an higher SELF that’s wise, intuitive, talented, creative, and above all, human.

  • W – Wise
  • I – Intuitive
  • T – Talented
  • C – Creative
  • H – A Human BEING

Today, I want to talk about something we all share equally: the power of intuition, the essence of this witchery.

Discovering My Truth Meter

From a very young age, perhaps 8 or 9, I was fascinated by something I didn’t yet have a name for—intuition. Back then, I simply thought of it as my internal Truth meter. It was a quiet knowing that helped me navigate a world that often didn’t feel fair or safe.

I remember being a devout little Catholic girl. I wanted to be a priest, or at the very least, an altar boy. But, of course, I couldn’t because I was female. Instead, I was chosen by the nuns at my school to clean the church each week. They trusted me to be there alone, and I would sneak into the sacristy where the priests’ vestments were kept.

I was mesmerized by the jewel-toned brocade stoles. I’d slip them on, knowing it was considered a “sin” for these sacred garments to touch my girl skin. At one level, I accepted the rule. But at another, deeper level, I knew that rule wasn’t from TRUTH.

Even as a child, I would wonder, How do I KNOW this? Where does this knowing come from? Where do my thoughts come from?

Another vivid memory is of a school guidance counselor advising me to take home economics because she didn’t think I had the intelligence to pursue anything beyond being a homemaker. (Ironically, homemaking requires incredible intelligence!) But she didn’t see me for who I truly was—a natural scholar who would one day earn a doctorate in psychology.

Even then, I knew her words didn’t define me. Something deep inside told me I was capable of so much more.

The Peace of Knowing

Moments like these taught me to trust my inner compass. Certain thoughts carried a sense of clarity, peace, and power. They felt right—like a safe harbor in a tumultuous sea.

That sense of peace protected me, reassuring me that something within me could guide me through a world that often felt cruel and irrational.

Have you ever felt that kind of knowing? A moment when you just knew something to be true? If so, hold onto that moment. Reflect on it. Ask yourself:

Where did that knowing come from?

Defining Intuition

Over the years, I’ve come to understand intuition as one of the most profound gifts we have. It’s been explored and defined by great thinkers, each adding their unique lens:

  • Carl Jung: “A function of perception mediated by the unconscious, directed toward perceiving possibilities inherent in the present moment.”Jung highlights intuition’s ability to perceive possibilities and foresee what’s unfolding beneath the surface of life.
  • Florence Scovel Shinn: “In-tuition, or to be taught from within. It is our unerring guide, a spiritual faculty that simply points the way.”Shinn expands on Jung’s definition, framing intuition as a spiritual guide.
  • Sydney Banks: “Love is an intuitive way of life, knowing what to do and when to do it, with great faith in the abundance behind life.”Banks takes it even further, tying intuition to love and the infinite intelligence that flows through all of life.

For me, intuition is when “the spiritual eye of LOVE flies wide open, and we see, hear, or know possibilities with crystal clarity.”

A Gift for All of Us

Some might think intuition is a special gift, reserved for a lucky few. But when I asked Sydney Banks about this, he said, “Everybody can see outside the boundaries of time, space, and matter if they wish. It’s not special.”

That simple truth shifted my understanding forever. Intuition isn’t rare—it’s universal. It’s not magic—it’s our natural state.

So the next time you feel that inner knowing, trust it. Ask yourself: What possibilities is it showing me? How can I lean into it with love and faith?

Because, as I’ve learned, intuition is always there—ready to guide us with wisdom, creativity, and peace. It’s the essence of being a “witch,” and it’s available to every single one of us.

To Forbear

There is a space no longer than the blink of an eye, between event and reaction. It is there that all manner of sacred possibility resides. The person on the end of the phone had just launched a bomb targeted at my inner peace. I gasped out loud. Words of retaliation marched to the tip…
