The Transformative Power of Grief: A Gift Hidden in the Wreckage
“I held my dead husband’s Christmas gifts to my chest and sobbed. Unmoored at the age of forty-six in a sea of bereavement, waves of sorrow swamped me. My last glimpse of Jim in his gifts—a brown plaid flannel shirt and gold suspenders—is paired with the click of the lid of a bronze casket as it closed our human life together. It was a twist of fate that I found the right clothes to bury him in just days before his sudden death.”
– Leaning into Curves: Trusting the Wild Intuitive Way of Love, Linda Sandel Pettit, Ed.D.
So begins the prologue to my memoir, which is really a love story not a grief story!
The earthquake of grief cracks us open, and within the rubble of our shaken experience lies a treasure: the keys to deeper love and wisdom.
Grief touches all of us at some point in life. It is one of the universal experiences of being human, yet it often feels isolating and unbearable when we’re in the thick of it. I’ve learned, through my own journey and in working with others, that grief has the potential to transform us in profound and enduring ways.
Recently, my husband, Bill, a psychiatrist, and I hosted an intimate “living room chat” on Zoom. The group came together to explore the Three Principles Understanding, which points to how we create our experience of life through:
• Mind, the formless spiritual intelligence behind life.
• Consciousness, the awareness that makes life possible.
• Thought, the spiritual power we use to create form on the human side of life.
Toward the end of the evening, someone asked us to speak about grief. It was a tender and meaningful question.
Bill and I shared our very different journeys through the losses of our first spouses—his wife to cancer, mine in a car accident. While our experiences were unique, we both agreed on this: grief isn’t just something we endure. It has the potential to shape us, expand us, and deepen our understanding of life and love.
Grief as a Natural Companion to Love
Grief, I believe, is inseparable from love. Its depth reflects the magnitude of our attachment to the people, places, and experiences that have brought us joy, meaning, and purpose. When those relationships end, whether through death, change, or other losses, letting go is one of life’s greatest challenges. Yet grief, as painful as it is, can also be one of life’s profound teachers.
If I could live my life over again, I wouldn’t erase the intense grief I felt after losing my first husband. Those eighteen months after his death were my “dark night of the soul.” But within that darkness, I found treasures I continue to uncover today:
• A deeper, unfolding knowing that only love is real.
• A more conscious appreciation of beauty and Truth.
• A profound lesson in the precious singularity of the now.
The Principles Are Always Guiding Us
What’s extraordinary is that even in the depths of grief, the Three Principles—Mind, Consciousness, and Thought—are always at work, guiding us from within.
• Mind, the spiritual intelligence behind life, holds us steady, even when life feels shattered.
• Consciousness brings the gift of awareness and understanding, allowing us to see new perspectives and find clarity over time.
• Thought, when seen for what it is, becomes the creative force that enables us to reshape our lives, moment by moment.
When we allow ourselves to trust this natural guidance, grief becomes less about surviving and more about transforming.
A Privilege for Helping Professionals
As helping professionals, coaches, and guides, we have the privilege of walking with others as they navigate grief. What if we didn’t see it as something to “fix” or “treat” but respected it as a force that transforms? What if we trusted the intuitive wisdom of the human spirit—and the Principles always working within us—to help uncover treasures in the pain?
I invite you to reflect: How has grief changed you, or how have you helped others through its transformative power? Let’s continue this conversation. Together, we can remind one another of the profound wisdom that lives within us, even in our darkest moments.

Good Morning, Divine Feminine
“Mama, I can’t breathe,” she said. Ancient and black, ankles spilled over battered sneakers, she raised her arms to the mystery.
